Hi everyone! Apologies for the lack of blog posts, but I just got back from a fantastic trip to Cabo & definitely took a bit of time to unwind. While I was there I tried to keep my beauty & hair routine as minimal as possible, so thought I would share what I packed with you guys!
With 90+ degree temps & humidity, plus frequent pools dips, no one wants to be dealing with a ton of makeup & high maintenance hair. I even told my boyfriend that I was committing to not wearing makeup the whole trip… but didn’t end up sticking to that haha. At the very least, I kept things low key. If you’ve read my Summer Heat Proof Makeup blog post, then you’re probably familiar with some of my favorite warm-weather products. For this trip, I brought the following:
Pretty minimal if I do say so myself! My go-to cosmetics case this hanging Tartan & Twine one, so I can hang it up out of the way. Hope this was helpful, are any of you going on any beach/warm weather vacations soon? Let me know in the comments!
Happy Friday! Here are the things that kept me going through the week…
Dying for this silky blue bodysuit, perfect jewel-toned piece to add to your wardrobe for fall!
I love home pieces that are fairly neutral but have interesting textures & patterns, this Urban Outfitters rug fits the bill, I’m thinking of getting it for my room. AND it’s on sale!
I’m probably the farthest thing away from a domestic goddess, and when I cook for myself I always make sure I follow a healthy recipe. I made this Baked Chicken Milanese from my favorite healthy food blog, SkinnyTaste and it was SO GOOD!
Ok, this is a little bit crazy but I bought this. Dermstore had a 20% sale on all devices this week so I couldn’t resist almost $100 off this LED lightmask. The reviews are good, and I’ve been hearing so much lately about all of the amazing skin benefits of both blue (for acne & acne scars) and red (for wrinkles & pore refining) LED lights. My skin has been a nightmare lately so I’m really excited to try this out, and feel like I got a 2 for 1 with the anti-aging & acne benefits! I’ll keep you guy posted on results.
Probably the ultimate Friday fave….I’m leaving for Cabo next Wednesday for a short getaway with my boyfriend & I can’t be more excited!
This week was short & long at the same time, but as always, I’m excited for a little weekend R&R. Here are a few of my favorite things this week
Love these wine colored tassel earrings, perfect fall party accessory
I’m obsessed with leopard print right, along with the rest of the world, and these pumps really hit the spot (and they’re under $150!)
I’m late to the Summer Fridays party but I’ve arrived and I’m SO here for it. I know they launched a new product recently that I have yet to try, but I just used their OG JetLag mask when my skin was freaking out (breaking out but also dry… my boyfriend said I looked like a recovering Zombie, thanks babe!) and I woke up with smooth hydrated skin that glowed.
I’m shook. Honestly, I can’t wear these a ton because they’re a major statement piece… but the heart wants what it wants.
I somehow stumbled upon Lucy Wood’s channel on Youtube & am dying over her “Average Girls Tries Pretty Little Thing Model Outfits” video. Someone needs to show women that we can’t all pull off these ridiculous trendy looks made for models .. and that’s OK! She’s body positive, beautiful, hilarious & a great fashion & beauty resource.
I started reading Silence of the Girls this week and am almost done, I’m obsessed. It’s the classic Illiad told from a women’s point of view. If you love the classics but want something with a modern twist, you’ll love this.
`I rarely leave the house without a little glow. Whether it’s a little shimmer moisturizer mixed in with my sunscreen before a run, a swipe of highlighter when I’m doing a barely there look or a super-glam, blinding highlight, I don’t feel complete without a little glow. Here are some of my highlighting tips
I like to add a little shimmer during every step of my makeup process. I start by adding something like Mac Strobe Cream to my foundation, or in case of a “no-makeup” day, I mix it in with my sunscreen if I’m going outside.Once I have my foundation/bronzer/concealer done, I like to highlight all the high points of my face, down the bridge of my nose, my cupid’s bow, cheekbones, brow bones, the temple as well as the inner corner of my eye.
A note on color & tone– I always prefer a warm highlight over a cool one. Obviously, the exact shade depends on how deep your skin tone is, but very few people can pull off an icy, blue toned highlight. The whole goal of highlighter is to give you a healthy, glowy, lit-from-within look, and I find that happens best with peach, rose gold, bronze, or warm gold, highlights. I also shy away from anything to yellow gold as I think it looks a bit harsh.
Were officially in September! When fall comes around I like to freshen up my beauty routine, focusing on moisturizing masks, fall-inspired colors & maybe a foundation switch up.
I’m probably the last person to try this Summer Fridays mask, but I just grabbed one because I think it’s going to be helpful during this transitional time, my skins tends to freak out with temperature changes.
I’m a huge fan of setting sprays that don’t dry you out; this one looks nourishing
I can’t wait to get my hands on this new foundation from legendary makeup artist Gucci Westman, reviews say that its light and natural looking & super easy to apply
I have one color of this liquid lipstick and I’m a big fan, not too drying & lasts for a long time. I’m looking to grab some deeper colors to wear this season
This cranberry Tom Ford eye quad screams fall, and I love wearing warm colors on my eyes. It’s expensive but really luxurious looking
Barbara Strum products are the newest stars in skincare, these nutrition supplements meant to aid in keeping skin glowing & youthful.. definitely something I need
Who else likes to buy new products when the seasons change? Let me know if you end up picking up any of these!
I heard Jen speak on a podcast about how most people don’t focus on their mobility, joints, flexibility etc until its too late, and freaked myself out. Luckily she has a program that’s $15 a month and gives you mobility flows, HIIT workouts & core workouts to keep yourself strong in all the ways we neglect. I work out a lot but I’m not good at stretching and taking care of my joints, so I want to force myself to be better with this program.
LA is having a SERIOUS heatwave. I’m talking 90 plus degrees near the coast… we’re dying over here.
During the summer or whenever it’s this hot, I like to pare down my beauty routine so it’s as fuss-free & heat-friendly as possible. That means cutting down on powders, which cake when you sweat, embracing dewiness & going for a more natural look. Here’s a break down of my routine & must-have products for heat-proof makeup.
I start with Fenty Beauty primer (my absolute favorite) to at least try to keep everything in place. I then mix Mac Strobe Cream (about a dime sized amount) with my IT Cosmetics CC cream & add a little bit of Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi Serum. I read amazing reviews about this product online and tried it and am absolutely in love, you can mix it with just moisturizer or sunscreen if you want even less coverage, but it adds such a pretty bronzy glow to whatever you mix it with. Apply with a damp beauty blender or even your hands.
For concealer, I use the usual suspects, Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard, Vanilla & Honey. If somehow I’m looking fresh (rare) I’ll skip this part. For heat-proof makeup, I use concealer sparingly since its a bit thicker & thus more likely to crease or cake.
I then use a cream bronzer, either Chanel Soleil de Tan or Fenty Beauty Match Stix in Cocoa. Apply with an angled brush & blend out with beauty blender… or just use the beauty blender if you’re short on time & tools.
Pat on a cream blush, I like Glossier Cloud Paint in Dusk, or this Kosas blush & highlighter duo. I use my fingers to start then blend with a beauty blender.
Apply cream highlighter, again I like Glossier’s Haloscope in Quartz or the cream highlight from the blush duo I mentioned above. I focus on tops of cheekbones, temple, brow bone & cupids bow.
Set the under eye with a little Laura Mercier powder and a 224 MAC brush (or something equally as small & fluffy). Use sparingly, just under the eyes, side of the nose, chin & a little between the brows (or wherever you tend to get oily.) The goal is to allow the majority of your face makeup to meld & mix with the oil & sweat you produce, which will be inevitable in the heat.
Eyes, Brows & Lips
I like to use a little bit of cream bronzer in the eye socket for definition, and if I’m wanting a little more glow I use a cream shadow like Glossier’s Lidstar(I’m loving “Fawn” & “Cub”….. PSA I was at the Glossier store and heard someone say Beyonce loves “Fawn”. If its good enough for Queen B it’s good enough for SimplyB!)
Use a tinted brow gel like Glossier’s Boy Brow to brush brows into place.
Also… I swear this post is not sponsored my Glossier, they just have great low maintenance beauty products!
I keep it simple & fill in with my favorite liner, Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk & apply some Aquaphor
Let me know in the comments if you try any of these products!
Happy September everyone, it’s officially Fall! I’ll save you the typical schpiel about how excited for all things boot & pumpkin related (because we know I am) by keeping it short & sweet and telling you I’m just happy to be getting into the crisper months.
J. Crew is really killing the game with their fall separates right now. They have some adorable silk & velvet camisoles that I have in my shopping cart right now, along with some super cute blazers & coats I also want to grab. PLUS an amazing fur vest in the yummiest wine color.
I‘m also in the process of building a pair of custom shoes with Shoes of Prey! I’m sure you’ve seen the shoes below on Pinterest, I feel like they are the most pinned shoes ever! They’re by Aquazarra, and retail for like $700. Since I don’t have that kind of cash lying around to spare on shoes, I decided to make a similar pair on Shoes of Prey for only $150. Can’t wait to see how they turn out!
Finally, I just stocked up on some Everlane basics. While I love a good statement piece, nothing beats have great quality pieces like long sleeve t-s for layering, crisp black jeans or my new favorite wide leg pants. Shop all the pieces I purchased below!
I don’t know if you heard, but Rihanna just changed the makeup game. Her Fenty Beauty line is TO DIE FOR. The collection is focused on skin, so think primers, highlighters, contour & concealer sticks. I bought the Universal Lip Luminizer, and am in love. While I’m not usually a gloss person, this is just so flattering and pretty with just the right amount of shimmer & warmth. You can wear it alone or layer over lipsticks and it really does look good on everyone. I also grabbed the Primer which I’ve been mixing into my foundation before applying ( I read somewhere that it works better that way) and it gives me the perfect matte without drying me out. I also grabbed the Match Stix Shimmer in Starstruck and want to get my hands on “Rum” because it’s suppose to look beautiful as a bronzed eye.
On the hair front, my hairstylist recommended these two products to me during my last visit and I’m in love. The first is an Apple Cider Vinegar rinse. I have a problem scalp so this really helps both with scalp irritation and also to remove product build-up. It’s color-safe and somehow takes the place of a shampoo & conditioner, without smelling like traditional ACV. Seriously magic. The second is Marula Oil 3 in 1 Styling Creme. It’s super moisturizing and tames my frizz really well. I put it in after I shower and either let my hair air dry (90% of the time) or style. It’s like a leave-in conditioner, styling cream, and hair oil all in one, plus it smells amazing.
Healthwise, I’m trying something called carb cycling, you can read about it here. I owe you all an updated fitness post where I’ll go into more detail but essentially you cycle high carb days with low carb days as a way to decrease calories a bit & shock your body, without cutting down your carbs too much. I’m a monster on anything less than 100g of carbs per day so I’m using a moderate approach where I don’t go below that.
If you haven’t watched Narcos, do it now. I finished it in like three days, mainly because of my intense crush on Pedro Pascal. I’m also super excited that Outlander is back on! If you’ve never watched it and love period shows, it’s definitely a must! Every time I watch I have the urge to re-visit and or move to Scotland.
I also just received my first monthly task from a program called Safety Pin Box. The idea behind Safety Pin Box is to better educate white people who want to become better informed and strong allies for the Black Liberation movement, with a particular focus on women. This month’s theme is #blackreprodjustice. Repro rights are near and dear to my heart, but I know I have an inherent bias that prevents me from advocating on behalf of women of color, so I’m really excited to dig into this and make some changes to my way of thinking and advocating.
